art basel proper, scion art show 4
Today was more about art than climatizing, considering I am still hurtin from the redneck session with Bothan last night plus whatever nasty food I picked up the night before that, it was the only sensible thing to do. Again, there will be a selection of my favourite pics over on Slam, so check those too.
We went and checked the Art Basel show proper first. One can get easily sidetracked by the numerous side shows happening here but the actual Art Basel was a blast, apart from, as per usual with anything even remotely official in the US, the security and their self inflated sense of protecting the world from those evil camera carrying terrorists. Essentially, I wasn’t allowed to pictures in the show, I did obviously take some, but apologize for the weird angles on some of them. Art Basel is massive and while time didn’t allow for us to check out every single gallery on show I think we caught the good, bad and not so important ones. At one time I was standing next to Dennis Hopper looking at a Basquiat-granted he was probably on the phone to his accountant to buy the thing while I was just happy to actually see a large Basquiat in real life for a change.
A few snapshots.
My favourite artist to be honest, I know not that original, but whatever, I still love a Lichtenstein any day of the week.
If there’s one thing to take home from the art basel show then it is the trend to return to craftsmenship. I have always had a real issue with conceptual and most, not all, but most modern art whereas if I see a real craft involved in the object I have found easier to understand and appreciate it. Obviously, with all this art related, it’s a matter of taste however, in comparision to previous art shows in the past years, it is quite clear through the selection of work shown that the art buying masses are returning to more crafts orientated work. A trend that will hopefully one day translate into the rest of the world.
After the art basel show we went to the scion art 4 installation, which was on the roof top / penthouse of the Raleigh Hotel here on the beach front. Open bars, a lot of friendly faces and good art made it a dope night out.
I spent all day with Ron from The Shadow Conspiracy shooting the shit and then met up with Cody Hudson later at the Scion show.
That’s all the people shots you’ll see tonight from me, I am sure the other blog crowd can satisfy that need. Here’s some more amazing art that was on display.
