(art) downtime
We took a little down time from all the art and networking (partying) today and checked out Miami’s retail offerings and culinary excursions (Jerry’s). Even though Miami does have it’s fair share of stores, high end, malls and streetwear stores I won’t really get into them, especially the streetwear ones. I’m not hating on them at all, but as far as I am concerned if you have seen one streetwear “boutique” you seen them all, regardless of what city/country/continent you are on. It’s pretty dissappointing to see the pinacle of youth culture creativity being so helplessly un-creative. Brands are being bought predominately on hype and mixed with even more brands, there’s no thought given to presentation and honestly if I see another shitty sneaker “exhibited” in an old fish tank I am going to puke. There was, however, one really amazing exception to the rule ( as per usual ) and it came in the form of the very hidden away Tomas Maier concept (in the true form of the word) store here in South Beach.
Tomas Maier, is the current Creative Director of Bottega Veneta, but unusually so, on a freelance basis, allowing him to not only have his own brand but also run this amazing store. It is situated in an 1920’s old Spanish colonial house, and it sells a selection of items that he picked up around the world, ranging from art, clothing, books and jewellrey. A great a selection, the usual shitty staff, but regardless definitely worth a visit if you are in town.
The living proof of how the freedom of speech sometimes can bring out the freaks, and I haven’t even shown you the pictures of the guy with the rooster and the snake man.
We were supposed to meet the English Mob at Miami Ink as Mr. White was meant to get some work done, unfortunately, and as we all know, TV is nothing but lies, and Miami Ink is just another shitty serviced up their own arsed store believing their hype. Granted, none of the owners were there but the staff just plain sucked. ***update*** I think Dave got his ink done now.
Giving up on the rest we all cruised down to the beach which was probably the best idea of the day. It was pretty wild swimming in the Ocean this close to Christmas but great at the same time. Ron and Rachel from The Shadow Conspiracy, some beers and sun resulted in fun times and a little sun burn.
Finished off the day with some bad ass mexican food and frozen margaritas, keeping in line with the food thing on the blogs you know.
