Live from St. Louis

It seems many of us in the Lodge find time to blog in airports, or in the swing of trips. Today, I am in St. Louis, on route to Springfield, IL. Thanks to last minute planning I have a 5 hour layover here. Thanks to a friend, I am ensconced in the American Airlines Admirals club. The irony is, my next fight will last roughly 20 mins.

The trip to Springfield is part of the planning for the 21st Century Abe project I’m working on with the Rosenbach Museum in Philadelphia. The Museum houses the fine collection of the Rosenbach brothers, who together maintained the Rosenbach Company. They achieved great success as book dealers, helping to develop collections of renown from the Huntington in California to Widener Library at Harvard. In the process they developed their own assemblage, which includes a wonderful selection of manuscript material written by Lincoln. Speeches and Letters.

These form a base for the exhibition. Pulling themes from them, I (along with my colleagues) hope to connect the text to the musical and visual work inspired by Abe’s words. We’ve got some great folks involved so far.

And, so, I’m off to Springfield. Home to Lincoln’s Law Office, the presidential library, and 30 miles from New Salem, the reconstructed village of Abe’s youth. I endeavor to visit each and every site associated with Lincoln in an 18-hour period. Such is the life of a museum worker.

In the meantime, I’m in what might be the worst airport I’ve been in for 8 months (Memphis is pretty bad too). That oppressive feeling of late 70s/early 80s terminals that populate much of the American interior. Dinning options are awful. Amusement abysmal. Don’t recommend this place. (However, the city itself is pretty cool, and the CIty Museum is a must… nothing like it elsewhere in the world).

More words (and hopefully inspiration) related to Springfield later.
