Under the Influence
People, places, things and experiences, seem to be what’s neglected in this age of Internets hype. That is to say, if it can’t be tied to something kids aren’t willing to sleep outside to get, then they are of no value because they can’t purchased.
Since I’ve been slowly relinquishing the ghost behind shell, I figured I’d take my opportunity here to highlight some of the things that have influenced me throughout the years.
This is probably the theme that I’m going to be running for a while so if you’re not that interested, you should probably check out my homey Richard Martin.
Subcommandante Marcos
In 1994, the EZLN rose up and declared war on the government of Mexico, citing the need to change the way politics was handled to the opposition of NAFTA. Their spokesperson was a man known as Subcommandante Marcos, who had a signature trademark of smoking a pipe while wearing a ski mask.
At one point in the 90’s, there was a rumor that the real Marcos was killed in a firefight but yet the masked figure continued to be seen in press because so few had seen his face.
It’s kind of like Sub-Zero’s ending of Mortal Kombat 2, where you find out that he’s not the original iceman.
When I adopted the Satchel persona, I always kept that concept in the back of my mind. Sometimes the message needs to be stronger than the man.
FUCT
I know writing about someone who blogs on this site is kind of like wearing a Smashing Pumpkins to a Smashing Pumpkins concert, but I’d be remiss to not mention how influential a brand FUCT was.At a time when the convergence when hip-hop, skate, and the economic recession was peaking, FUCT was one of the few brands that managed to not only permeate the various music genres, but also sum up the state of the US economy.
Ironically, we’re all pretty much fuct even worse then we were back then.
Tom Capone
Tom Capone didn’t make it on to Rolling Stone’s “The 100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time, ” but he should have been somewhere in there. In addition to playing in Absolution, Capone was one of the anchors of Quicksand and his staccato riffs and false harmonics were probably the best part of Handsome.
Capone in addition to that other Tom, where the reason that I picked up a guitar.
Suriname
When you’re from a country that few people stateside have heard of, the notions of what you are become more important that who you are.
Rawkus Records
My first internship was at Rawkus Records. I was 19-years-old and at the time, I was at what was regarded as one of the most prolific rap labels in the music industry.
After interning there I started thinking that “Industry Rule 4080″ should actually be re-labeled as “Industry Rule #1.”
But that’s a whole other blog post….
