A Case of the Mondays
Ok, so here’s a bit of a belated recap of the weekend, mainly because I did things people might actually care about. Like seeing Radiohead. Twice. On a plot of land overlooking the Statue of Liberty, Ellis Island and Lower Manhattan. As few of you know, I’ve been working diligently on a new magazine called Manhattan, a luxury lifestyle deal for NYers and those who wanna be NYers. When I say diligently I mean frantically, as in, kind of working/thinking/tinkering/freaking 24-slash-7. When a friend called or texted of whatever and offered a VIP pass for All Points West fest Friday night, with Radiohead in the top slot, I was like, I am exhausted and need to be alone with my bottle of tequila on Friday night. But I’m starting to re-energize. I just published a piece about this awesome Parisian artist Jean-Michel Othoniel (http://www.galeriepieceunique.com/infoframes/othoniel.htm) for Bing, a magazine published by Galerie Emanuel Perrotin (http://www.galerieperrotin.com/), and Manhattan is coming along; we should get it out by early September, on schedule. So I went to see Radiohead. And it was insanely good. The band played facing Lady Liberty, with video banks flanking the stage, showing each member of the band in different angles and with visual overlays. Thom and Co. weaved through songs from the new album plus classics like “Paranoid Android” and “Everything in its Right Place.” The light show was insane–the NY Times compared it Superman’s dad’s pad on Krypton–and the whole spectacle was sick. So when I was offered tix for the second night, I went to that too. And saw Animal Collective get all crazy before watching Radiohead come out and kill it again, going the rock route with “Airbag” and “The Bends.” Oh damn, forgot to mention: After Friday night’s fest, I linked up w/ some NYC promoters and my friends and we went to see Deerhunter play a 1 am surprise set. If y’all don’t know Bradford Cox, catch up with his work at http://deerhuntertheband.blogspot.com/. And download his podcasts. Anyway, Deerhunter played a ridiculous set of early Sonic Youth-like dissonance and a general “fuck it” attitude that had me pretty stoked, even though I could barely stand up after weeks of insanity and 11 hours straight on my feet on a friday night. Anyway, that’s a really long way of saying that it’s hard to like a Monday after that. Oh yeah, did I mention that it was like 80 degrees fahrenheit the whole weekend? Yeah. New York City. Which reminds me, Saturday morning, Mayor Bloomberg and Jay-Z got up early and closed a major swath of NYC’s streets so bicyclists could go from the bottom of Manhattan to the 72nd entrance of Central Park. The postman woke me up and my girl up at 9:30 with a package for my neighbors (DAMN!) and we were like, “Fuck it, that’s a sign, let’s ride over the Brooklyn Bridge to Central Park.” So we did. And it was amazing. So that’s it. No clever ending. And though this will mean little to anyone, here’s the artists my iTunes played on shuffle while I was writing this:Deerhunter (I started it off)WilcoA Cloud Mireya LunaSpoonEcho & The Bunnymen (weird, noticed on Radio City marquis this eve that they’re playing there 10/1)Prefuse 73New Order. G’night from NYC.
