FILLING MY IPOD
OK I LOVE THIS QUESTION WITH OUT A DOUBT THE PERSON THAT I WOULD HAVE FILL MY IPOD WOULD BE RICK RUBEN IF YOU DON’T KNOW WHAT HE HAS DONE THEN TAKE A LOOK AT HIS PLAY LIST.
Producer Extraordinaire, RICK BUBIN
I just saw the 49th Grammy Awards of 2007 and the name that is ringing in my head is not from the Record of the Year, not the Best Hip Hop artist or Best New Artist. This is a man behind the scenes, but very much still gripping it all well enough to have the Dixie Chicks and Red Hot Chili Peppers giving him the kudos all night. That name is Rick Rubin.
The first time I take notice of this name, is when I chanced upon a rather odd (back then) recording, a beat-fucked, deconstructed bootleg remix of Queen’s We Will Rock You and We Are The Champions, on the label DMC. (famously “Fucked Up by Rick Rubin”) It’s something so fresh and so raw like I have never heard before (back then). One thing led to another and I find his name on production credits with the Beastie Boys and Run DMC. And that’s just the tip of this iceberg.
Rick Ruben with Neil Diamond in the studios.
Rick Ruben is also the guy who started Def Jam Records with the help of Russell Simmons in the early days when he was still in New York University. His education in hip hop comes from meeting Zulu Nation’s DJ Jazzy Jay. With his concept of “hip hop is the new punk”, he searched for underground acts that are good around the bronx, resulting in the first record signed to Def Jam is non other but LL Cool J’s I Need A Beat. He went on to sign Run DMC and Public Enemy to the label.
In 1988, after a power struggle with Def Jam’s president Lyor Cohen, Rubin left Def Jam, Simmon stayed and he went to LA and started Def American Recordings.

Uncanny. I was just having a huge conversation about Rick the other day. He’s the one who will undoubtedly save the music industry, if anybody, in my opinion.
