Good Music Road Trip
Recently hit the road from Vancouver to Seattle to catch a show for the night. Left the camera at home and it really doesn’t matter as this is for the ears not the eyes. However, that said, if you get the chance to catch any of these bands live I do recommend it!
First off, co-pilot for the ride was a good friend who has an insane depth of music knowledge and who’s band is about to start recording their first full length at Vancouver’s Mushroom Studios. Sun Wizard are making some noise in Vancouver so click the pic below to have a listen.
To the matter at hand. Made it to Seattle in time for some record shopping (scored Uriah Heeps first record for $2, amongst others), dinner and brews. Check in, walk to venue in time to catch fellow Vancouverites that were mid migration from an extended stay in New York back to the homeland.
are a husband/wife duo that killed a great acoustic set with just a guitar, harmonica and 2 mics. These 2 had a great dynamic, as you would imagine, and a song writing style that brought you through the ups and downs of their relationship. I should note there was a lot of real drinking talk and they certainly didn’t stick to the sunshine and roses.
Next up were Seattle’s own
Who I was unfamiliar with but when they took stage blew away the crowd with some melodic head nodding psychedelia. These cats had the stage packed with at least 6 people and probably double the instruments. They were ripping 10 minute + jams that strangely enough you hoped wouldn’t end. Headliners….
The reason for the trip. The recently reformed Seattle beer drinkin’, rock and rollers Whalebones. I’ve been to a few shows as of late where by the time the headliners reach the stage the openers have either outshone or your interest is lost from the time dragging on. Not the case here. Whalebones took stage and brought the crowd to a high yet to be reached, jamming out a set so solid, building through time to the last few heavy jams including a personal favorite “love is a dessert”. I’ll be counting the days until I get to see them play again and since they were the only merchless band will have to hold my breath for their record release.

PS – the night continued on and the next day was spent catching up with out of town amigo’s and a few roadside heaves. No biggie.
